RUDYARD KIPLING (1865-1936), born in Bombay, he was brought to England in 1871, where he spent five years living unhappily in Southsea with his younger sister, separated from his parents. From 1882 to 1889 he worked as a journalist in India; many of his early poems and stories were originally published in newspapers or for the Indian Railway Library. In 1896 he returned to England, settling in Sussex, though Kipling continued to travel extensively, spending much time in South Africa, which he first visited in 1900, during the Boer War, where he had first sight of warfare. In 1907 he was the first English writer to receive the Nobel Prize. His fluent versification, with its powerful echoes of hymns and ballads, and his use in both prose and verse of colloquial speech, impressed many but alienated others. His most uncontroversial and durable achievements are his tales for children, principally “The Jungle Book” (1894); “Just So Stories” (1902); “Puck of Pook´s Hill” (1906); and “Rewards and Fairies” (1910), and his picaresque novel of India “Kim”, generally considered his masterpiece.

Queen Victoria may have ruled the Empire, but it was her soldiers, sailors, and colonial administrators that bore its weight. Here, in SOLDIER STORIES, are seven of Rudyard Kipling's short stories, most of which have three recurring characters: Terence Mulvaney, Stanley Ortheris, and John Learoyd ‒ all rank-and-file Tommies serving (at one point or another) in India and Burma. The short story "The Drums of the Fore and Aft" takes place in Afghanistan and has as its two heroes the drummer boys Jakin and Lew.
The time is the 1880s.
The principle character is Mulvaney, and his "Oirish" dialect is quite often difficult to comprehend and it takes getting used to. I sometimes just resorted to skimming the text for the gist of it. That said, Mulvaney is an enormously appealing fellow. I wonder if his character may have served to some extent as the basis for McAuslan of George MacDonald Fraser's McAuslan series (The Complete McAuslan) although the latter was a Scotsman.
SOLDIER STORIES open a small window of insight in what it was like to serve with Her Majesty's regiments, either on the front lines or in the cantonments in Afghanistan, India, and Burma. It should appeal to any casual student of the British Empire and the colonial British Army. And, for the most part, the plots of the stories will leave the reader satisfied. Only "The Man Who Was" seemed incomplete and left me wondering what the entire backstory was.
SOLDIER STORIES is a worthwhile read if your interests encompass the subject matter.

Very dated but a good read all the same
Clear tales of what a soldier at war must endure. Written in dialect and hard to understand, but the storyline is not hard to follow.
Kipling's story is not of famous heroes but of old time Tommy Atkins. Same same Ernie Pyle and WWII GI Joe. Just classic.
You've got to love Mulvaney
Readers; If you do not like soapy,hippie falvoured, politically correct writing,Mr.Kipling is your man. This collection, from the time of the English in Afganastan, reads much like a current blog. The style, the pathos, the humour, and the evils of an Army of Conquest & Occupation is well laid out here. The former soldiers(circa 20th21st Century) will enjoy it very much.
A stinging satire of Colonial English Policy, & the English Army, as well.
Read 'Soldier Stories' for a rousing afternoon spent well .
A bit difficult to read-Kipling writes just as the soldiers would have talked making the story a bit challenging to decipher. The stories however, are very descriptive and exciting.
As an Anglophile, I am interested in British culture and history, especially the British Army's stint in India during Queen Victoria's long reign. Kipling is very gifted in capturing army life during the period. The stories he relates in Soldier Stories are about three or four soldiers whom I am certain he met during his time in India. He writes the men's dialogue in the dialects of the Scottish and Irish strange pronunciation of the English language. If you can get past that, you will love the stories. I recommend it.
